The old Frankish inperial and Episcopal city, the most important town in the Uipper Franconia, lies on the western edge of a wide basin in the valley of the River Regnitz, here divided into to arms, which flows into the Main River 4 miles downstream.
The town has a river port on the Main-Danube Canal; its industrial zone (principally engineering, textiles and electrical goods) is East of the Town. It has numerous breweries; a local specialty is Rauchbier, brewed from smoked malt.
