Day 6 – October 27, 2005
Wurzburg’s history began about 1000 B.C. as a Celtic shelter on the left bank of the Main river on a hill known as Marienberg. Later, in 650 A.D. the Franconian Duchy was established and a small settlement grew on the right bank of the Main. This settlement became the city now known as Wurzburg. In 689 the City was christianized by three Irish monks, Kilian, Totnan and Kolonat and only a couple of centuries later, the Diocese of Wurzburg was founded. Today it’s a modern city. 90% of the city was destroyed during World War II, but a great deal of the buildings have been beautifully restored.
We enjoy a glorious sunset on the trip back to the ship. We reboard the ship at 6:30 – very long busy day. Dinner and Medieval entertainment in the lounge. The ship arrives at Karlstadt.
