Day 6 - October 27, 2005
In the 12th Century Miltenberg became a toll-station belonging to the Electors of Mainz and in the 13th Century Mildenburg Castle was built on the slopes above the town. Miltenberg prospered as it was given the right to mint money and was granted the so-called “Stapelrecht, or Right of Stapling or Storage”. This meant that all passing merchants had to offer to sell their wares to the town for a period of 3 days. This gave employment to the towns-people as the goods had to be unloaded from the ships, stored in warehouses and then (if not sold) loaded onto the ships again. The 14th and 15th centuries brought prosperity to Miltenberg growing as a fortified town. After the people of Miltenberg found themselves on the losing side of the Peasants Revolt of 1525, fortunes turned. The Town was claimed by Gustav Adolf of Sweden during the 30 Years War and during the Napolianic era as part of the Leiningen principality. In less than a generation it was claimed by Baden, Hesse and Bavaria.
