Day 6 – October 27, 2005
The town of Miltenberg is not the first settlement on this location. The Romans, realizing the importance of this place on the Main River, established a fortification to house 500 foot soldiers and 2 cavalry brigades. This was destroyed by the Alemanians in about 240 A.D. but evolved through the Middle Ages to become a market town know as Wallhausen. During a conflict between the Archibishop of Mainz and the Rhenish Palgrave in 1235, Wallhousen was completely destroyed. The Castle Mildenberg provided refuge for the surviving inhabitants.
