Day 5 – October 26, 2005
Heidelberg was not damaged during the 2nd World War unlike so many German Cities. The American forces dropped leaflets on the town (rather than bombs) saying that they wished to use the town as a base and headquarters after the war. There is still an American Military base at the town today. Around 20,000 US soldiers, civilian employees and the family members live in and around the city, making it one of the largest “American Communities” in Western Europe. Right after the war the US army made undestroyed Heidelberg into its European headquarters and later some additional NATO command posts moved in.
